Pollination and fertilisation

We already know that some plants have flowers and that the flower is the reproductive organ of a plant, but did you know that most flowers have male and female reproductuve organs?

The stamens are the male reproductive organs and these produce pollen.

The carpel is the female reproductive organ and this includes the stigma and the ovary. The ovary produces ovules.



For plants to reproduce, the pollen first has to travel froma the stamens to the stigma. We call this process pollination.

It can be in two different ways:

- Animal pollination
- Wind pollination

Fertilisation occurs when pollen joins with an ovule. This process happens in the stigma. The fertilised ovule becomes a seed. The stigma develops and forms a fruit around the seed. When a seed lands in soil it can germinate and a new plant grows.
